What Is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the lungs grow uncontrollably and form tumors. These tumors can interfere with breathing and spread to other parts of the body. It’s a serious disease, but early detection can drastically improve survival rates.

There are two main types:
  • Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC):  The most common type (~85% of cases)
  • Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC):  A more aggressive and fast-growing form
Global Impact:

According to the World Health Organization, more than 2.2 million new lung cancer cases are diagnosed annually. Early detection and prevention could reduce this number dramatically.

Know the Risk Factors

Understanding your risk is the first step toward prevention and early detection.

Major Risk Factors:
  • Smoking (including secondhand smoke exposure) – the number one risk factor.
  • Exposure to radon gas, asbestos, or air pollution.
  • Family history of lung cancer.
  • History of chronic lung disease like COPD.
  • Prior radiation therapy to the chest.
  • Age 50 and above.

Symptoms: What to Watch For

Lung cancer symptoms often appear in the later stages but recognizing them early can be lifesaving.

Common Symptoms:
  • Persistent cough that doesn’t go away
  • Chest pain worsened by deep breathing or coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood
  • Hoarseness
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Recurrent lung infections (like bronchitis or pneumonia)

The Power of Early Detection

The earlier lung cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance of survival. In fact, Stage 1 lung cancer has a 5year survival rate of over 60%, compared to less than 10% at Stage 4.

Recommended Screening:

Low-dose CT scan (LDCT) for adults aged 50–80 who:

  • Have a 20 pack-year smoking history (1 pack/day for 20 years)
  • Currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years

Prevention: Your First Line of Defense

While some risk factors can’t be controlled (like genetics), many can be. Empower your community with preventative tools and lifestyle changes.

How to Reduce Your Risk:
  • Quit smoking (or never start)
  • Avoid secondhand smoke
  • Test your home for radon gas
  • Use protective gear if exposed to hazardous materials at work
